If you have been following me for a while you know I am no fan of new year’s resolutions. They are inevitably set up to fail, and lead to more needless guilt in February or sooner. Why is this and what can you do about it? Firstly, stop the “shoulds”. I should lose weight, I should drink less, I should watch less TV, etc.
To quote that famous philosopher, Yoda, There is do, or not do, there is no try.
If you decide on something, and it is you doing the deciding, (not a spouse, parent, boss the culture, etc. then have a written plan for the achievement!
Now the important step; what weekly action steps have you attached and committed to for their achievement? Note: I said weekly, not weakly. Without the action steps, it is merely wishful thinking.
Now, after that diatribe why should you approach the coming year with thought-out written goals? Firstly, it is as good a time as any. Secondly, if you don’t, your life will only be a continuation of getting what you have got! (Look up entropy in Google.) If you are fully satisfied with who you are and what you have, Congratulations! But you are one of the very few. A very real roadblock for many, myself included, is risking the evaluation of the path you are on. You may feel it could take years to get where you want to, but to paraphrase Jim Roan, you can change direction today! Then at least, the road you are taking is getting you closer to where you are going.
As we look at the new year there may seem many things out of your control but perhaps, we have more control than we realize. Study after study proves our response to an event is more relevant than the event itself. Jim Roan also said the sun rises and sets on us all. So be profound, make a difference!
As always, I would like to hear from you. If you have taken the trouble to write out where you want to be, and how you are going to get there, send me a note, I would love to encourage you! Not coaching, just sharing the journey with someone along the way.
Let’s see where we take 2022!
