I just got an insight on true goal setting from Andy Stanley, a noted author, pastor and podcaster.
People believe that coaches are to help people get what they want out of life. However, for this to be truly valuable, knowing what they want is less useful than knowing what they value.
At the end of the day, their values should drive their wants. Other than that, there wants are just a shopping list of stuff. Wants that aren’t values driven don’t satiate for long. It is a little like oxygen, it is all you think about when you don’t have it, and when you do, it never comes up again.
This requires more work from our coaching clients, the stuff we often seek, our culture informs us on. The car, the house, the job, the boat etc. I agree, having things to strive for helps us grow, but the foundation should be on who and what we are.
Want to research “Values driven Life”? There are 14.000,000 hits on Bing! Hey – pick five or six, have a look, and let me know what you thought.
And yes, I will still help you get that car, house or dream job. But this might help you frame the list better.
Till we chat again,
Wayne
